Why The Studies Are Small

Read around the names on any supplement panel and the same shape appears. Forty participants, sometimes sixty, occasionally a hundred. Eight to twelve weeks. Often one site in one country.

Why that size. Funding, mostly. A pharmaceutical trial is paid for by a company holding a patent at the end of it. Nobody patents cinnamon. What remains is university departments, small grants and the occasional ingredient supplier, and none of those budgets stretches to thousands of participants.

What a small trial does well. Catch a large effect. Where an ingredient moves something substantially, forty people is frequently enough to see it. Small trials genuinely earn their keep at generating a signal.

What a small trial cannot do. Reliably detect a modest effect, rule out a modest harm, or say much about people unlike the participants. It also cannot escape the publication problem: a study finding nothing is less likely to be written up than one finding something, so the visible literature tilts positive before anybody reads a line of it.

Why it compounds on a blend panel. A modest effect found in a small trial at a full quantity leaves very little to reason from when the amount in front of you is an undisclosed fraction of it.

The position this site takes. Some names here hold real literature. Chromium holds something better, which is an established nutritional role rather than a pile of results. Others hold a handful of small studies, and three hold little beyond long use. Fourteen unequal files get fourteen separate grades instead of one averaged sentence.
